Greg Bishop - Intervention Specialist, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals
Greg BishopGreg Bishop is an Intervention Specialist for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals and a former Principal's Coach at Cousino High School in Warren Consolidated Schools (with an enrollment of over 1800 students). Greg has been a mathematics teacher, a curriculum department head, an assistant principal, and principal over his 19 years in education. Greg has been instrumental in leading intervention initiatives in the Warren Consolidated School District which serves over 15,000 students. Greg has co-chaired a district-wide Teaching and Learning Committee which led Warren Consolidated in adopting a Professional Learning Communities Model which uses a 45 minute weekly delayed start for professional collaboration. Greg has led initiatives in the district and nationally on virtual credit recovery programs. Greg has spoken at the National North Central Accreditation Conference in Chicago, Illinois for the past two years, the Southern Association of Council Schools in Orlando, Florida and the Michigan Instructional Leadership Conference in Traverse City, Michigan.

Title:  

Building Successful Response to Intervention Programs

Description:  

This session will focus on the multiple programs Cousino High School uses to intervene with students who are not learning. Cousino High School has adopted the collaborative process of Professional Learning Commuities. Through the use of this collaboarative process, Cousino has developed interventions for students who are not learning. The session will focus on the multiple intervention strategies Cousino uses in addressing students who are not learning. Using a customized computer based program of credit recovery along with creative scheduling of Academic Learning Centers, Cousino has achieved a success rate of over 80% of students recovering one or more failed core classes while still exposing students to high levels of rigor. Furthermore, collaboratively developed peer mentoring, character education, mandatory tutoing, and conflict resolution programs have been instituted with high levels of success. The session will focus on ensuring achievement for all students: developing systems of prevention and intervention, building sustainable leadership capacity, and activities regarding vision and goals. Participants will be engaged for about 50% of the session in building a vision, goals and developing intervention programs for success of all students.
