Who We Are

The HOPE Foundation (Harnessing Optimism and Potential through Education) was founded in 1989 with Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu and Renee’ Fleming as its Honorary Chairs. HOPE has worked for decades throughout North America and South Africa to change the trajectory of children’s lives such that Failure Is Not an Option for any of them or the schools communities that serve them.

“What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love” Superstar Diana Ross famously sang and turned gold in 1994. It is even more relevant today.

After a 10-year hiatus, HOPE is now focused on catalyzing the collective action of communities to meet their most pressing needs while maintaining a sense of hope. In an era in which wildfires, earthquakes, floods, homelessness, and massive levels of violence dominate the daily headlines, it is easy to give in to despair, anger, fear, or a sense of helplessness. Sustaining and acting on a sense of hope and the possible is a courageous act, deeply rooted in a larger mission.
